Orvieto Duomo and old town with a chauffeur
Duomo, San Brizio Chapel, Pozzo di San Patrizio and Torre del Moro: what to see in Orvieto and how to arrive with a chauffeur.
What to see in Orvieto
Orvieto stands on a tufa cliff. Its symbol is the Duomo, begun in 1290, Gothic and Romanesque, with a mosaic facade and Orcagna's rose window. The San Brizio Chapel holds Luca Signorelli's Last Judgment (1499-1504), begun by Fra Angelico. You can also visit the Renaissance Pozzo di San Patrizio with its double spiral staircase, the Torre del Moro with its panoramic terrace and, on a dedicated tour, the caves and tunnels of Etruscan origin beneath the town.
Arriving with a chauffeur
The old town has limited traffic zones and pedestrian areas, and access by vehicle depends on the gates. For this reason the drop-off point is agreed in advance, following the municipality's rules, and the rest of the visit is on foot. Guests coming from Rome or Florence avoid looking for parking.
Worth checking before you go
The Duomo has seasonal hours, reduced opening on Sundays and Masses during which visiting may be limited: check the Duomo's official site. The well and the Torre del Moro involve many stairs and are not well suited to anyone with mobility difficulties. Tickets and hours are to be checked with each site.
Combines well with
Civita di Bagnoregio and Lake Bolsena in one day, or the wineries of the area. Orvieto can also be visited as a day trip from Rome and Florence.
