Classic Rome by chauffeur: Colosseum and Vatican
Colosseum, Roman Forum, Vatican and Trevi Fountain: bookings, the ZTL and what to know when visiting Rome with a chauffeur.
The best-known sites
The Colosseum with the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill, St Peter's Basilica and the Vatican Museums with the Sistine Chapel, the Trevi Fountain. They are very busy places with bookings, named tickets and security checks.
Rules worth knowing
The Colosseum requires a booked time slot and the ticket is named, with ID at the entrance. The Vatican Museums sell tickets online only on the official site. St Peter's has security checks and a dress code covering shoulders and knees; there is no cloakroom. For the Trevi Fountain, access rules for the basin area apply to non-residents: see Roma Capitale's information. Hours and closures should always be checked on the official sites.
With a chauffeur
You do not have to look for parking or worry about traffic, but the last stretch is almost always on foot: Trevi and its square are a pedestrian area. The Centro Storico ZTL has time bands and, according to Roma Servizi per la Mobilità, taxis and NCC vehicles are among the admitted categories; the rules should be confirmed. You buy tickets yourself on the official sites. Anyone with mobility difficulties should enquire first: the archaeological sites have level changes.
Planning the day
One booked visit per morning or afternoon, at comfortable times, avoids rushing between sites. Rome also pairs with a day in Tivoli, the Castelli Romani or Orvieto.
