Lake Bolsena and Civita di Bagnoregio by chauffeur
How to visit Lake Bolsena and Civita di Bagnoregio with a chauffeur: what to see, how Civita is reached and what to check beforehand.
Civita di Bagnoregio
Civita is a village on a tuff plateau that keeps eroding, nicknamed the Dying Town. It can be reached only on foot, over the reinforced concrete footbridge built in 1965, about 300 metres long above the badlands valley, and is entered through Porta di Santa Maria. Entry to the village is paid, with a ticket online or at the ticket office before the bridge.
Lake Bolsena
The lake, in the province of Viterbo, is volcanic in origin and described as Europe's largest volcanic lake. Along the shore: Bolsena, which gives the lake its name, Montefiascone with the Rocca dei Papi and its views, Capodimonte with the Rocca Farnese and the boats to Bisentina Island, and Marta with its fishing port. Visiting the island is to be checked with the boat operators.
With a chauffeur
The chauffeur takes you to the Bagnoregio area, not into the village itself: from the viewpoint you walk down and then up to Porta Santa Maria, in comfortable shoes, which is not suited to anyone with mobility difficulties. A limited traffic zone may apply around the bridge, to be checked with the municipality. Touring the lake towns, instead, is easy by car with stops as you like.
A day from Orvieto, Rome or Florence
The lake and Civita can be combined in one day starting from Orvieto, Rome or Florence, with pickup and return wherever you prefer. Both can be visited all year; spring and autumn are comfortable for walking, and in summer the lake is busier.
